PT Course Description
RESCUE YOUR BACK: COURSE 1 - INTRODUCTION
Presented by:
Cathy Mahon, PT, MS
November 4 & 5, 2011 (Fri & Sat)
Annapolis, Maryland
"The fundamental problem
in the treatment of back pain is that 85% of the time
the cause is unknown."
ABOUT THE COURSE
The cause of back pain is unknown 85% of the time; that impacts 60 million Americans.
What’s missing?.... The evaluation recommended in this course.
The material in this course takes the foundation of what is learned in physical therapy school a few steps further to obtain a more accurate and measurable picture of the patient. For most patients the data obtained clearly demonstrates that the limitations in their basic mechanics is the cause of their back pain. This course will focus on the following:
- Measurement Technique. Technique is important when taking measurements in order to accurately obtain the mechanical picture unique to each patient.
- Assessment. Matching the patient’s mechanical picture to their pain/symptoms is the key step, and establishes the physical therapist as the expert on back pain (particularly for those 85%.)
- Patient Education. Patient understanding of their own unique mechanical limitations facilitates patient ownership and success.
- Treatment. The treatment plan is based on objective and measurable findings and is subsequently more successful.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

- use the data obtained about the patient’s pain and mechanics to develop:
- tailored program to help the patient protect the back during daily activities.
- a home exercise program to effectively addresses limitations in mechanics.
- a ‘quick relief strategy’ the patient can use to decrease their pain on their own. - recognize the role physical therapy needs to play in the back pain epidemic, and the important role this evaluation can play in the issues surrounding direct access.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THIS APPROACH
"I am impressed with how comprehensive and thoughtful your approach is to therapy... I must say, even with all the study of the spine that I have done, I had never thought of many of the connections you made."
Brian S., MD
Neurosurgeon
"I am pleased and amazed with the results. I have been to other PT’s before, but it only got me through a crisis, there were no long term results and long term chronic pain has been my real problem."
Stephen B.,
Education/Admin.
"I saw a PT when I had three bulging discs. When one herniated I had surgery, then the disc re-herniated. After all of that, I was very fortunate to see Cathy as my PT. I now wonder if I may have avoided the herniations and surgery if I had this approach to PT first."
Andrea S.,
HR Director
"Cathy helped me understand my pain. When you understand why you hurt, you have the ability to make changes to control your pain. This practical approach is especially effective for busy professionals and helps cut through the myriad of techniques available in the marketplace."
Laura M.,
RN & Attorney
